Capability comparison
How a specialist bridge screening compares with a generic AI plan checker and a general-purpose chat model — honestly, including where the others win.
| Capability | AECOverse | Generic AI plan-check | General AI (ChatGPT / Claude) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bridge / DOT / AASHTO specialist checks | Core — FCM, weld prequalification, strand debond, camber & geometry, DOT amendments | Building-oriented; no bridge/heavy-structural specialty | No |
| Multi-sheet set + cross-sheet reconciliation | Yes | Yes | No — cannot reason across sheets spatially |
| Evidence per finding (sheet, values, basis) | Yes | Yes | No — general commentary only |
| Findings placed on a marked-up PDF | Yes — standard deliverable | Varies by vendor | No |
| Findings framed as advisory (your EOR verifies) | Yes — flagged for review, never certified | No — fully automated | No |
| Never trains on your drawings | Yes — contractual, plus deletion after delivery | Varies by vendor | Depends on plan / settings |
| Discipline focus | Bridge & heavy-structural (buildings supported) | All disciplines, building-oriented | General purpose |
| Delivery model | Engineer-confirmed, ~1–2 business days | Instant, self-serve | Chat reply |
| Findings framed as | Flagged for your review — never certified | Automated issues | Unverified prose |
| Best used for | Specialist pre-submittal screening on bridge / structural sets | General building plan check | Drafting, research, Q&A |
Where the others win — and it's fine to say so. A generic plan-check tool is faster and cheaper for a routine, all-discipline building set, and a general chat model is unbeatable for drafting an email or researching a code concept. Use the right tool for the job. For a bridge or heavy-structural set that a licensed engineer will stake their seal on, depth in the domain and a human confirming the output matter more than instant and cheap.
A general chat model can summarize the text it extracts from a PDF, but drawings communicate through geometry, symbols, dimensions, and relationships across many sheets. A general-purpose LLM has no reliable way to reason about those relationships or apply a code to a specific drawn condition — and it cannot tell you which of its statements to trust. Excellent for drafting and research; not built for pre-submittal drawing QA.
Depth and confirmation. Generic tools screen broadly across building disciplines and run fully automated. AECOverse goes deep on bridge and heavy-structural — the AASHTO, welding, precast, and constructability checks generalists do not reach — and every finding is advisory, for your engineer of record to verify.
